Napoleon Assaults the British Center - The British Cavalry Saves the Day
Napoleon's plan to weaken Wellington's center by drawing allied troops to reinforce the right flank appeared to be working. Taking advantage of this situation, the Emperor sent in an infantry attack on the center of the ridge. Formed into three giant columns, numbering over 14,000 infantrymen, the French lumbered across the sodden fields and climbed the ridge, figuring to punch a hole through Wellington's line. It was a near run thing. The Anglo/Allied line poured volleys of musketry into the French, and their artillery did massive damage, but the valiant Gallic forces pushed on. Just as it looked as if the French would succeed, however, a large force of British cavalry appeared as if from nowhere, charging into the flank of Napoleon's great assault. The victorious British cavalry broke the attacking columns and pushed the French infantry back to their starting point. But the British Cavalry badly misjudged the situation and a French cavalry counter-attack decimated them - battle for the center was over for the moment.
