Napoleon's First Attack on Wellington's Infantry - The Battle for the Fortified Farm of Hougoumont
When Napoleon led his French Army against the English and their allies at Waterloo, he little imagined it would be the last great battle he would ever fight.
The French Emperor assumed that Wellington, leading a polyglot force of British, Dutch, Belgian and Brunswick troops, many of them ill-trained or even pro-French, would present only a small challenge. His Grande Armee, the greatest army the world had ever seen, had conquered most of Europe in the past 20 years. The problem Napoleon faced was that the British occupied a very strong defensive position along a low ridge to his front. How to displace them?
The key to Wellington's right flank was a fortified Belgian farmhouse, "Hougoumont." Wellington had filled it with a few elite infantry units, who fought from behind stone walls and from the upper stories of the farm buildings. Napoleon's on-site commander, who was expected to brush these troops aside, found himself in a challenging day-long battle instead.
The would-be overwhelming French forces attacked over and over again from late morning until the battle's end, but failed to seize the fortified buildings and surrounding gardens. Like Rorke's Drift in the Zulu War, the battle is always remembered as a successful defense by a vastly outnumbered force against impossible odds.
