Ultimate The Battle of Thermopylae
At the pass of Thermopylae, in Northeastern Greece, a small army of Greek hoplites, led by the king of Sparta and his 300-man bodyguard, held off a vastly superior force of Persian and allied troops in one of the most lopsided battles ever fought. The Greeks occupied a narrow seaside pass, forcing the Persians to attack where their superior numbers could not be brought to bear. Spearheaded by the Spartans, the heavily armored Greeks might have held back the eastern invaders even longer, had a local tribesman not betrayed them and led the Persians around to attack them from the rear. Nevertheless, the Greek last stand has been celebrated in song and story for thousands of years, most recently in the novel "Gates of Fire" and the film, "300". We salute the brave Greeks is this playset, pitting their small numbers against a large force of Persians as they fight for control of the rocky terrain.
