Prior to the German takeover of Czechoslovakia in 1938, the Czechs erected a massive defense network of bent railroad ties, formed into "hedge hogs" to halt German tanks in the case of an invasion. These massive obstacles were used by the Russians to great effect, being made out of metal or great baulks of wood if there was no metal available. Large hedgehogs could be employed en masse, or even singly in urban defenses, where just one big one could block an entire street. The Germans built their own giant hedgehogs and installed them all along the Atlantic coast prior to D-Day. They were often placed below the waterline, intended to tear out the bottoms of the flimsy wooden landing craft the Allies employed. into tough steel beach obstacles which they installed below the waterline all along the French. Each miniature 2ix-pointed hedge hog measures an inch across and an inch high, and can be placed any which way, as they are designed so two of their 6 points will rest on the ground while the other four will be in the air.
