This is a Medieval training device called a "quintain". The purpose of it is to teach warriors to improve their timing for close-in fighting and jousting. The dismounted warrior hits the shield and ducks in the same motion (see Kirk Douglas in 'Spartacus'). The mounted fighter hits the shield squarely in the center with his lance as he rides by (see Prince Valiant). The top half of the quintain spins around to smack the warrior with its mace. If the foot warrior ducks in time the mace passes overhead. If the mounted fighter judges his stroke and rides by without losing his speed, he also wins. If either fails to strike the quintain properly, and with perfect timing, the next warrior in line files the first warrior's disability insurance papers.
