Ancient Super Powers Clash at Sea!
In the long-lasting Punic Wars (264 B.C.E to 146 B.C.E.) which ultimately led to Rome's domination of the Western Mediterranean, the North African city state of Carthage contested the ever-growing power of the Roman Republic. At the beginning of the Punic Wars, Carthage was the prevailing naval power in the Mediterranean Sea. But Rome, ever the innovative and adaptive nation, quickly sought to catch up. They copied a captured Carthaginian war galley, improved it and built their own fleet. Then they tasked their land-trained infantry to become seagoing marines. Within 20 years the fledgling Roman navy had defeated the Carthaginians and obliged them to sue for peace, ending the First Punic War. This playset gives you the opportunity of fighting an ancient naval battle between rival Carthaginian and Roman war galleys, each with a shipload of their nation's marines, painted in authentic uniforms.
