The city of Thebes supplied a unit of troops to support the Spartans at Thermopylae. 700 Thespian hoplites fought to the last man in the mountain pass, choosing death alongside their allies over the opportunity to withdraw. The half-moon symbol on each man's shield represents Black Aphrodite, and is the emblem of Thebes. This uniform can be seen in the Osprey Great Battles of the World series on Thermopylae, page 51.
