The UThulwana Regiment carried buffalo-hide shields painted white with black stripes. Set includes chief and 5 warriors in action.
The skill of the Zulu warrior in close combat is nearly legendary. Trained since childhood in the use of weapons and tactical maneuver, the Zulus of the early and mid-19th century swept all opponents before them, building an empire out of the shattered states of their tribal enemies. They were a well-established power in Southern Africa until they came up against the British Army. Armed with quick-firing rifles, powerful cannon and well-equipped cavalry, the British also possessed a stern discipline that was almost as amazing as the Zulus. Their arrival brought an end to the Zulus' days of empire-building.
