The Buffs began their career in 1572, originating as Thomas Morgan's Company of Foot, The London Trained bands. In 1751 it was renamed the 3rd (Kent) Regiment of Foot "The Buffs". It received this name because of the color of the coats in which the regiment was garbed when they served in Holland in the 18th century. The regiment was awarded 116 battle honors, having seen service in such campaigns as War of the Spanish Succession, the War of the Austrian Succession, the Seven Years' War, The Napoleonic Wars, the Gwalior Campaign, The Crimean War, The Second Opium War, the Zulu War, the Northwest Frontier, the Anglo-Egyptian War, The Second Boer War, The First World War, the Second Afghan War and the Second World War.
