The 5th (Royal Irish) Lancers were originally raised in 1689. They served in the Wars to put William III on the throne, in the War of the Spanish Succession under the Duke of Marlborough, in the Irish Rebellion of 1798, then in India between 1863 and 1874, in Egypt and the Sudan in 1885 during the Mahdist War, and later, in the 1st and second Boer Wars.
