The regiment was expanded in 1881 as part of the Childers Reforms by the linking of the 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment of Foot and the militia and rifle volunteers of Cheshire. The title 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment continued to be used within the regiment.
The regiment served throughout the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, in Ireland, the Low Countries, Jamaica, The War of the Austrian Succession, The American Revolution, India, Burma, The Boer War, The First World War (at Gallipoli, in Mesopotamia and on the Western Front), The Second World War (where it saw service with the B.E.F. and was evacuated at Dunkirk, then later, in North Africa (at Tobruk), in the D-Day Landings, and through the Rhine Crossings)
After World War II the regiment saw service in Cyprus and Egypt, Malaya, Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Iraq.
