They served around the globe in the second half of the 19th century, notably in China (1856-59) gaining fame during the attacks on the Taku Forts and the advance on Peking; in the opening of Japan (1859-63); in the Egyptian campaign of 1882, notably at Tel-el-Kebir; in the Sudan Campaign of 1884, notably at El Teb and Tamaii; in the Boer War (1899) and the Boxer Rebellion (1900).
