After the 16 year ordeal of the French Revolution, the country's war weary and mentally exhausted citizens were ready for the kind of stability that they thought Napoleon Bonaparte offered. When, in 1805, he proclaimed himself Emperor and personally placed the crown on his own head, wearing ceremonial robes of the Emperor of France, the country breathed a collective sigh of relief.
