James Coburn's acclaimed performance as the tough Sergeant Steiner helps the audience accept that the heroes of this picture are Nazis. The film, which is Sam Peckinpah's only war movie, has many flaws, many of which were due to the director's drinking and drug habits, as well as its limited budget. But the problems with plot, pacing and budget are offset by the realistic action scenes and the excellent performances by Coburn, James Mason, Maximillian Schell and David Warner. This is one of those pictures which is difficult to watch because it doesn't come near the brilliance of The Wild Bunch, Ride the High Country and The Getaway. But like similar near-misses as The Ballad of Cable Hogue and Major Dundee, even marginal Peckinpah is still illuminated by moments of sheer artistry, dazzling action and superb performances. You won't find a 1:18th character of Coburn on the market, so this'll have to do. (2020 production)
