The California Dragoons were a hybrid U.S. Cavalry unit created in San Francisco in the 1840s. Because so many U.S. soldiers had deserted to go hunting for gold, it was considered imperative to have a body of trained troops to protect the new state, and protect its citizens. So sailors from the U.S. fleet anchored in San Francisco Bay were taken off their ships and converted into cavalry - The California Dragoons. In deference to their origins, the troopers retained their sailor tunics and wore them with regulation U.S. cavalry trousers. The unit also took part in the Mexican-American War. We display the reference plate from Osprey's Men at Arms book #281. This set contains 3 retired Jean Hoefler 7th Cavalry figures in 3 poses, painted by our in-house artist into soldiers we used in our war games. Excellent condition. Our choice of poses.
