Mr. Rose, one of the world's most knowledgeable and talented toy soldier artists, wrote this comprehensive guide to collecting soldiers in 1985, and updated it in this 2nd edition in 1997. Long out of print, his handsome, oversized hardcover book, printed on heavy stock paper, runs 130 pages. This amazing work includes full color photos of more than 2000 figures. It traces the development of toy soldiers from the earliest flats of the 18th century through hollowcast and solid lead figures, composition, aluminum and right through to plastic figures of the post-War era. The 45,000 word text serves as a history, reference work and overview of such great manufacturers as Britain's, Heyde, Mignot, Hausser Elastolin, Linoil, Lucotte, Britain's and Herald plastics, Timpo, S.A.E., Johillco and Crescent plus scores of other well known (and quite a few obscure) companies. Written in an entertaining and highly readable style, this work should be in the library of every serious collector.
