During the siege of Rorke's Drift, the British troops bolstered their defenses with long walls constructed of biscuit boxes, supplemented by heavy bags of mealy beans. These improvised works allowed the defenders, armed with rifles and bayonets, to shelter from Zulu rifle fire. Additionally, when participating in close combat, the British, standing behind them, used the greater length of their weapons to reach across the defenses to hold off the Zulus who fought with the short stabbing spear, the assegai.
