In an era when most countries could not afford to raise extensive mounted forces, Persia's vast resources and plentiful pasturage meant that they could field significant numbers of heavy and light cavalry regiments. Like the armored knights of medieval Europe, the heavy cavalry, wearing the best-quality armor, and riding armored horses, could be committed to shock duties on the battlefield. Few could stand against their charge, but they could also stand off at a distance and loose volleys of arrows at infantry units which could never hope to pursue them. These troops carried lances, bows and axes. The troops are cast in tan colored plastic and are in perfect scale to Expeditionary Force's Greeks, as well as Toy Soldiers of San Diego's and Fencibles' ancient-era figures. Set includes one officer and 4 armored cavalrymen who can be equipped with lances, bow or javelins. Horses, cast in a variety of colors, can be glued to their bases.
